Dart Grip Styles: Finding the Perfect Hold

Pencil grip, reverse grip, or the three-finger hold? Explore the most common grip styles and find what works for your hand.

There is no "perfect" way to hold a dart. Phil Taylor held his differently than Michael van Gerwen. However, almost all successful grips share three traits: stability, comfort, and a clean release point.

Common Grips

  • The Pencil Grip: Holding the barrel exactly like you'd hold a pen. Great for precision.
  • The Wide Grip: Fingers spread along the length of the barrel. Offers high stability.
  • The Rear Grip: Holding the back of the barrel or the stem. Favored by players with a long, sweeping throw.
